Midweek TV Preview: 23 - 26 April 2012
Monday 23 April
19:45 Leicester City v West Ham, Championship, Sky Sports 1/HD1
Both sides started the season believing they'd be a little higher up the table. West Ham arr nailed on for a play off spot but can keep their automatic promotion hopes alive until the final day of the season. Southampton are second in the Championship and will be hoping for Leicester win.Tuesday 24 April
19:45 Barcelona v Chelsea, UEFA Champions League Semi Final 2nd Leg, Sky Sports 2/HD 2/ SKY 3D (1-0 Chelsea from first leg)
The Blues earned very slice of luck against the Champions in the first leg but you have to wonder if they can keep it up at the Nou Camp. Barca have tripped up away from home against Arsenal and Stuttgart in the past only to put things right at home. Few will back against that happening against Chelsea.19:45 Gateshead v Luton Town, Blue Square Premier League, Premier Sports
After beating them at the weekend, the Hatters need three points against mid table Gateshead in order to hold off Kidderminster and making that final play off spot their own.Wednesday 25 April
11:30 Novara v Lazio, Serie A, ESPN/HD
The first of a triple header of Italian games that were postponed following the sudden and tragic death of Livorno player Piermario Morosini. The home side are not completely relegated but they are as close to the drop as you can get. Lazio need to keep winning to ensure that Champions League play off birth for next season14:00 Roma v Fiorentina Serie A, ESPN/HD
As I write, Roma are getting humped by Juventus so their Europa League hopes aren't looking so good. Fiorentina have moderate relegation concerns which may add a modicum of bite to what is a humdrum fixture.
17:00 Cesena v Juventus Serie A, ESPN/HD
The gap is now three points between Juve on top and Milan in second which means that the Old Lady now needs to pin her ears back and head for the finish. Cesena are bottom but have become draw specialists in recent weeks.
19:45 Real Madrid v Bayern Munich, UEFA Champions League Semi Final 2nd Leg, ITV1/ITV1 HD (2-1 Bayern from first leg)
Hard to see Real not scoring twice against Bayern's defense that has, occasionally, been fragile on the road. So Bayern need Ribery to put in another inspired performance and Schweinsteiger to keep order in the midfield. To close to call. Extra time a real possibility.Thursday 26 April
20:05 Athletic Bilbao v Sporting Lisbon, UEFA Europa League Semi Final 2nd Leg, Channel 5/Channel 5 HD (2-1 Sporting from first leg)
The English media's love affair with Bielsa and Bilboa is on the edge. Sporting, who have rarely received any coverage on UK TV this season, are threatening to ruin a perfectly good narrative by having the audacity to beat a Bilbao team that must be good 'coz they beat United innit?20:05 Valencia v Atletico Madrid, UEFA Europa League Semi Final 2nd Leg, ITV4/ITV4 HD (4-2 Valencia from first leg)
This all Spanish tie should be straightforward for the home side but should be weary of those pesky away goals.Sunday, April 15, 2012
Midweek TV Preview: 16 - 19 April 2012
Monday 16 April
19.30 Shamrock Rovers v Derry City, Setanta Sports Cup Semi Final 1st Leg, Premier Sports
Down to the last four in this all-Ireland knockout competition, of which three are from south of the border. Two of those three feature here and of those two, Shamrock are the defending champions.20.00 Arsenal v Wigan Athletic, Premier League, Sky Sports 1/Sky Sports 1 HD/SKY 3D
They've beaten Liverpool, they've beaten Man United... but can Wigan beat Arsenal? They've only lost two of their last ten, but then Arsenal have won eight of their last nine - including a fine win over Milan. Perhaps the betting folk among you will fancy a quid or two on Wigan to draw...?Tuesday 17 April
17.00 Egypt v Iraq, International Friendly, British Eurosport HD
An odd, rather unforseen chance to see Bob Bradley's Egypt side face Iraq in Dubai. Both teams will be hoping for a place at Brazil 2014, but domestic instability may have the final say on their preparations.19.45 Bayern Munich v Real Madrid, UEFA Champions League Semi Final 1st Leg, Sky Sports 2/Sky Sports 2 HD/SKY 3D
So now Bayern have capitulated in the race for this season's Bundesliga title, will they now be free to throw everything including the kitchen sick at an ever-dominant Real? It'll certainly take a Herculean effort if they're to become the first side since Inter in 1965 to win the European title on home soil.Wednesday 18 April
12.30 Guangzhou Evergrande v Kashiwa Reysol, AFC Champions League, British Eurosport 2
Third-v-second in Group H. Both teams are locked on four points out of a possible nine so far and played out a 0-0 draw when they met at the start of this month in Japan. Another draw looks likely.19.45 Chelsea v Barcelona, UEFA Champions League Semi Final 1st Leg, ITV1/ITV1 HD
Which sounds better for the Final - 'Real Madrid v Chelsea' or 'Real Madrid v Barcelona'? Right, now we've got that sorted out, put your full support behind Barcelona and make plans for May 19th.Thursday 19 April
20.05 Atletico Madrid v Valencia, UEFA Europa League Semi Final 1st Leg, ESPN/ESPN HD
And so to a very Spanish-flavoured pair of Europa League semis. Valencia enter their first European semi-final in eight years knowing Atleti are their for the taking, on current form. Ironically the Madrid club stopped Valencia reaching the last four a couple of years ago, but the visitors have claimed four of the six league points between the two this season and should win over two legs.20.05 Sporting Lisbon v Athletic Bilbao, UEFA Europa League Semi Final 1st Leg, Channel 5/Channel 5 HD
The only non-Spanish side in the last four will remember being beaten in the Europa League Final by CSKA Moscow seven years ago. Hoping to make amends for that, they must first do what they did the last time they faced Bilbao in the third round of this competition in 1985/86, i.e. win the home leg by a considerable margin.Monday, April 2, 2012
Midweek TV Preview: 2 - 5 April 2012
Monday 2 April
20.00 Blackburn Rovers v Manchester United, Premier League, Sky Sports 1/HD1
With Manchester City dropping two points at Sunderland - and it could easily have been worse - rivals United have a golden opportunity to turn the screw in the title race. But they won't have it all their own way, because at Ewood Park this evening they face a Blackburn Rovers side that is fighting for its life and has already caused them huge problems this season.Tuesday 3 April
19.45 Barcelona v AC Milan, UEFA Champions League Quarter Final Second Leg, Sky Sports 2/HD2
The first leg of this tie was an engrossing affair, with Milan's defence standing firm against a Barcelona front-line that can be accused of over-engineering some of its opportunities at San Siro. The Rossoneri's task is even bigger on Tuesday and the home team have to be favourites, but would you bet against Milan getting a score draw?19.45 Bayern Munich v Marseille, UEFA Champions League Quarter Final Second Leg, Sky Sports 4/HD4
Goals from Mario Gomez and Arjen Robben take FC Bayern back to Germany with an enormous advantage over Marseille, who slumped to a 2-0 defeat in their home leg. A likely semi-final against Real Madrid looms, and what a clash that could be.Wednesday 4 April
19.45 Chelsea v Benfica, UEFA Champions League Quarter Final Second Leg, ITV1/ITV1 HD
Roberto di Matteo and Chelsea head back to London with the slenderest of advantages over Benfica after a one-goal win in Lisbon. Salomon Kalou grabbed the goal from a lovely cross by Fernando Torres, and the Blues could do with their Spanish forward stepping up to finish off this tie once and for all.19.45 Real Madrid v APOEL Nicosia, UEFA Champions League Quarter Final Second Leg, Sky Sports 2/HD2
Is this match destined to be a goalfest? With Real 3-0 up from the first leg, APOEL's fairytale Champions League run has finally come to an end, and a hiding at the Bernabeu could be on the cards against their free-scoring hosts. Karim Benzema, who scored two in the first leg, is in brutal form in front of goal.00.50 Internacional v Santos, Copa Libertadores, Premier Sports
Group 1's two Brazilian sides meet with the top spot at stake. Santos have won three out of four matches in the group so far, while Internacional are in second with seven points from their four games. They beat Inter 3-1 in their home match on March 7th, and a similar result could put Bolivia's The Strongest into second if they beat Juan Aurich.Thursday 5 April
20.05 Athletic Bilbao v Schalke 04, Europa League Quarter Final Second Leg, Channel 5/5HD
Undoubtedly the match of the European week last time out, the first leg in Gelsenkirchen saw Athletic come from behind with a scintillating late rally to win 4-2, overshadowing a brace from the evergreen Raul. Schalke will need a similar mountaineering effort to overcome the odds on Thursday.20.05 Valencia v AZ Alkmaar, Europa League Quarter Final Second Leg, ITV4/ITV4 HD
Goals from the brilliantly monikered Maarten Martens and Aston Villa-bound Brett Holman gave AZ a slim advantage after their first leg against Valencia, but this is as finely balanced a tie as one could hope for. And they say there's no advantage to being drawn at home in the second leg!Monday, March 26, 2012
Midweek TV Preview: 26 - 29 March 2012
Monday 26 March
20.00 Man Utd v Fulham, Premier League, Sky Sports 1 / HD1 / 3D
Twirling their moustaches like all lovable rogues, Stoke City have kept the collective bums of the Manchester City players, staff and supporters nice and squeaky. Now the opportunity exists for Manchester's other club to take the lead in the Premier League title race. The odds are in the Red Devils' favour. The last time these two teams met was at Craven Cottage with the away side winning 5-0. Moreover, Fulham's away record has been pretty awful this season with only two wins on the road, all campaign.Tuesday 27 March
19.30 Tottenham Hotspur v Bolton Wanderers, FA Cup Quarter Final, ESPN / ESPN HD
Hopefully, Fabrice Muamba will be watching this rearranged FA Cup match from his hospital bed with confidence. His Bolton team-mates won at the weekend and their opponents have only won two games from their last nine.19.45 Benfica v Chelsea, UEFA Champions League Quarter Final 1st Leg, Sky Sports 2 / HD2
While Chelsea coach, John Terry insists that he is not the coach, his team face a very tough Benfica side. Remember that Braga team that proved to be incredibly hard to beat in the Europa League last season and finished runners-up? Well their coach is now at Benfica. Jorge Jesus's team have only lost once on the road in the Champions League and that was in the last round against Zenit St Petersburg. They still scored two goals in the match. If there are any over-confident Chelsea fans who think that the Blues have an easy draw (and there are) then they are dead wrong.19.45 Apoel Nicosia v Real Madrid, UEFA Champions League Quarter Final 1st Leg, Sky Sports 4 / HD4
Now this is an easy draw. Sorry, Apoel.20.00 Sunderland v Everton, FA Cup Quarter Final Replay, ITV1 / ITV1 HD
More embargo busting by the those arrogant English. Under UEFA rules, domestic fixtures are verboten during Champions League matches. Both The FA and the Premier League have been openly defying those rules and quite right too. UEFA have stretched their Champions League schedule in recent years, making it extremely hard to rearrange postponed fixtures at times that are convenient for both TV audiences and more importantly, spectators. Previous blackout busting had been on Sky and this is the first to be screened on free-to-air TV, so it will be interesting to see UEFA's response.Wednesday 28 March
19.45 AC Milan v Barcelona, UEFA Champions League Quarter Final 1st Leg, ITV1 / ITV1 HD
The tie of the round in Europe. Barca are imperious and must have the favour of the turf accountants. Milan were just as impressive in their first leg encounter against Arsenal in the last round but nearly blew it after being uncertain as to how to defend such a commanding lead. Somehow I don't think they'll have that problem against the mighty Catalans.19.45 Marseille v Bayern Munich, UEFA Champions League Quarter Final 1st Leg, Sky Sports 2 / HD2
The home side finally ended a run of 7 (SEPT) consecutive defeats with a 1-1 draw at Nice last weekend. Despite that, Bayern are expected to progress. The Bavarians overcame a tough Hannover side at the weekend and have scored 22 (ZWEIUNDZWEIZIG) goals in the last five games. They may not get much joy at the Velodrome, however, where a hostile reception awaits the visitors. Could be a big night.22.45 Defensor SF v Chivas, Copa Libertadores, Premier Sports
After a disastrous start to the season, Chivas are improving. The Mexicans face a Defensor side who they beat in the reverse fixture in Group 7 and are bottom of the group table.Thursday 29 March
20.05 Schalke 04 v Athletic Bilbao, UEFA Europa League Quarter Final 1st Leg, Channel 5 / Channel 5 HD
Now that those pesky English clubs are out of the way, UK broadcasters can relax and put on any team they like, safe in the knowledge that hardly any bugger is watching. This is one of two Bundesliga v La Liga clashes in the Europa league and the hardest to call. Tactics geek's poster boy Marcelo Bielsa wowed British audiences in the last round, with his explosive Bilbao team featuring the creative dynamo, Iker Muniain and striker Fernando Llorente. Meanwhile, Schalke posses the awesome attacking stylings of Jefferson Farfan, Klass Jan Huntelaar and some guy called Raul. If the idea of watching this game has no appeal then you know nothing about football.20.05 Atletico Madrid v Hannover 96, UEFA Europa League Quarter Final 1st Leg, ITV4 / ITV4 HD
Atleti have the pedigree and the class to beat a dogged but tiring Hannover team. The northern German club are going through a purple patch in their history thanks to their excellent coach, Mirko Slomka (who may be at Bayern next season). However, the Madrid club have former Werder Bremen playmaker, Diego in their side who is anxious to prove to Bundesliga aficionados that his ill fated stint at Wolfsburg last season was all Steve McCLaren's fault.20.05 AZ Alkmaar v Valencia, UEFA Europa League Quarter Final 1st Leg, ESPN / ESPN HD
This tie lacks the appeal of the other two but in Valencia, may well feature the eventual winners. Not that beating the team currently top of the Eredivisie will be anything but straightforward. However, an AZ win would be something of a coupon buster.Sunday, March 18, 2012
Midweek TV Preview: 19 - 21 March 2012
Monday 19 March
15.30 Spartak Moscow v CSKA Moscow, Russian Premier Liga, ESPN/ESPN HD
It's an unbeaten (if slightly unconvincing) start to the Championship Group for Spartak. CSKA are currently second in the table but are still awaiting their first win since the start of November.19.45 Roma v Genoa, Serie A, ESPN/ESPN HD
The Giallorossi need to get a move on if they're to secure Champions League football next season. They're seven points behind Lazio (currently third) and will be aware this is a great chance to reduce that to four if they can stay focused against Genoa.Tuesday 20 March
19.45 West Ham v Middlesbrough, Championship, Sky Sports 2/HD2
The Hammers are suddenly finding points hard to come by, to say nothing of convincing performances. Middlesbrough would like to think this will give them a chance to earn a few points themselves, but they too have lacked potency in their last two games, both lost.19.45 Juventus v Milan, Coppa Italia Semi Final 2nd Leg, ESPN/ESPN HD
The top two in Serie A already look likely to be playing Champions League football next season, but the Old Lady knows that a win tonight will leave them only one point behind their opponents. A win for Milan, however, will give them a seven point lead with only nine games left to play.20.00 Barcelona v Granada (starts via Red Button), La Liga, Sky Sports 4/HD4
Barcelona defender Daniel Alves has said his side will only give up once they cannot mathematically win the title. That should free up their plans for April and May.Wednesday 21 March
10.00 Kashiwa Reysol v Jeonbuk Motors, AFC Champions League Group Stage, British Eurosport 2
Hardly the best of starts for Reysol. One point from their first six in the new J League campaign and a defeat in their Asian Champions League opener against Buriram United of Thailand leaves the current Japanese champions with much ground to make up already.17.30 De Graafschap v FC Twente, Eredivisie, ESPN/ESPN HD
Two defeats on the bounce for Schteve, but he doesn't seem unduly worried. Nor would you be if bottom-placed De Graafschaap were your next opponents.19.45 Man City v Chelsea, Premier League, Sky Sports 1/HD1/3D
The first of our 10 matches to decide the Premier League. Chelsea's new found self-belief, coupled with the deadly shooting skills of Fernando 'One-in-a-row' Torres, surely make them favourites to win this one.19.45 St Mirren v Hearts, Scottish Cup Quarter Final Replay, Sky Sports 2/HD2
Just one win in the last 10 for St Mirren. If they can't win this one, they'll certainly not beat their waiting semi-final opponents Celtic. What's that? Kilmarnock, you say...?19.45 Napoli v Siena, Coppa Italia Semi Final 2nd Leg, ESPN/ESPN HD
Siena scored a 2-1 first leg lead during February at a time when Napoli could be said to have had the Champions League on their mind. The Neapolitans' shock exit to Chelsea last week might now persuade them to see this tie in a completely different light.21.00 Villarreal v Real Madrid, La Liga, Sky Sports 3/HD3
A fixture Villareal have won only twice since the turn of the Millennium. Away win, seeing as you asked.Monday, March 12, 2012
Midweek TV Preview: 12 - 15 March 2012
Monday 12 March
15.00 Anzhi v Spartak Moscow, Russian Premier Liga, ESPN/ESPN HD
Anzhi, Anzhi, when will those clouds all disappear? Well a win here might help, and put pressure on Spartak for that second Champions League spot.20.00 Arsenal v Newcastle United, Premier League, Sky Sports 1/HD1/3D
You get a feeling that Arsenal fans are perhaps waiting for the result here before they open up both barrels of the "mind the gap" meme that Tottenham fans were revelling in a few weeks ago. Fourth spot is not impossible for Newcastle, especially with a match against Chelsea to come.Tuesday 13 March
19.45 Bayern Munich v FC Basel, UEFA Champions League Round of 16 2nd Leg (0-1), Sky Sports 2/HD2
Much like English clubs, German teams have taken a bit a bloody nose in the latest round of European fixtures. Bayern should certainly have enough to turn over Basel's slim advantage, after a weekend performance that saw them put 7 (SIEBEN) past Hoffenheim.19.45 Inter Milan v Marseille, UEFA Champions League Round of 16 2nd Leg (0-1), Sky Sports 4/HD4
Since their win against Inter in the first leg, Didier Deschamps' side has gone on an awful run of four straight defeats in Ligue 1, failing to score to a single goal in that time.20.00 Liverpool v Everton, Premier League, Sky Sports 1/HD1/3D
Cup success may have proved a distraction but three defeats in a row for Liverpool has brought a chasing pack, including Everton, perilously close to them in the table. Victory for Moyes' team will see them leapfrog Liverpool into seventh place. Teams like Sunderland, Swansea and Fulham may do the same in coming weeks if Dalglish can't halt the slide.Wednesday 14 March
19.45 Chelsea v Napoli, UEFA Champions League Round of 16 2nd Leg (1-3), ITV1/ITV1 HD
Chelsea, while seemingly in disarray are still fighting on three fronts - critical fixtures for which they play over the next eight days. Firstly they have to overcome a first leg deficit against a Napoli side that scored six goals from six different scorers on Friday night. Up next for Chelsea is Leicester in the quarter finals of the Cup followed by a trip to the Etihad next week.19.45 Real Madrid v CSKA Moscow, UEFA Champions League Round of 16 2nd Leg (1-1), Sky Sports 2/HD2
In their last 19 home games the only team to restrict Real to less than three goals is Barcelona (twice). Should be pretty straightforward for Mourinho's men.01.00 (Thurs) Corinthinas v Cruz Azul, Copa Libertadores Group 6, Premier Sports
Cruz Azul have won both their games in the group so far but will find the Brazilian team a much tougher prospect, especially away from their 2200m above sea-level home in the suburbs of Mexico City. Chile's Waldo Ponce plays for them.Thursday 15 March
18.00 Athletic Bilbao v Man Utd, UEFA Europa League Round of 16 2nd Leg (3-2), Channel 5/Channel 5 HD
United will need to a two goal margin to progress through to the next stage, and that won't be easy considering that the likes of PSG and Barcelona have failed to win here this season. It will be interesting to see how Ferguson approaches this with an away trip to Wolves on Sunday where they'll need to take all three points to maintain top spot.18.00 Udinese v AZ Alkmaar, UEFA Europa League Round of 16 2nd Leg (0-2), ESPN/ESPN HD
Udinese's first leg defeat was no shock given the form they've been in for the past couple of months. They've lost fourth spot in Serie A and there's only one direction they're going. AZ are three points clear in the Eredivisie and should progress here into the quarter finals.18.00 PSV Eindhoven v Valencia, UEFA Europa League Round of 16 2nd Leg (2-4), ITV4/ITV4 HD
While PSV got two valuable away goals, giving them some hope in the tie, they've shipped 13 goals in the last three games including six against a Twente side that played half the match with ten men.20.05 Man City v Sporting Lisbon, UEFA Europa League Round of 16 2nd Leg (0-1), ESPN/ESPN HD
City have the luxury that they don't have to play for another six days after this fixture so they can go full out for the win. Which they'll no doubt get.20.05 Schalke 04 v FC Twente, UEFA Europa League Round of 16 2nd Leg (0-1), ITV4/ITV4 HD
Steve McClaren returns to Germany knowing that he needs only a draw to get to the quarter finals, though his side lost the lead in the Eredivisie after a shock 3-1 defeat to NEC at the weekend. Schalke got a victory by the same scoreline against Hamburg ending a run of three straight defeats.Monday, March 5, 2012
Midweek TV Preview: 5 - 8 March 2012
Monday 5 March
15.30 Dinamo Moscow v Anzhi Makhachkala, Russian Premier League, ESPN/ESPN HD
Now a household name across the football world, wealthy Anzhi bolstered their defence with the mighty Chris Samba at the end of the Russian transfer window. He followed Dutch coach Guus Hiddink into Makhachkala, another indication of their financial power - though it hasn't yet translated into honours.19.45 Dundee United v Inverness Caledonian Thistle, Scottish Premier League, ESPN/ESPN HD
A win for Caley Thistle at Dundee United on Monday would tighten things up somewhat in the middle of the SPL, bringing them within seven points of their hosts in a compressed mid-table. But a win for United would give them a seven-point lead over draw-happy Aberdeen, with the teams either side of the dotted line.19.45 Southend United v Crawley Town, League Two, Sky Sports 1/1HD
Crawley, shorn of some serious firepower in recent months, look to consolidate their playoff position with a trip to Roots Hall on Monday. Their hosts occupy the third and final automatic promotion spot but have endured patchy form of late.Tuesday 6 March
19.45 Birmingham City v Chelsea, FA Cup Fifth Round Replay, ITV1/ITV1 HD
After a 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge, Birmingham and Chelsea battle it out in the second city for the right to play against Leicester City in the FA Cup quarter final, a game that offers a realistic route to Wembley for either team in spite of being a potentially tricky one. Chelsea will need to start faster this time around - they were a goal down inside 20 minutes in the first game.19.45 Arsenal v AC Milan, Champions League Last 16 Second Leg, Sky Sports 2/HD2/3D
File this one under "Miracle Needed". Arsenal are 4-0 down after a Zlatan Ibrahimovic inspired mauling at San Siro two weeks ago. Robinho scored twice in the first leg after Kevin-Prince Boateng's brilliant opening strike. If Arsenal manage to turn this around I will drink a pint of Bovril.19.45 Benfica v Zenit St Petersburg, Champions League Last 16 Second Leg, Sky Sports 4/HD4
This second leg in Lisbon is beautifully poised after Zenit had the last laugh in an undulating first leg, Roman Shirokov scoring the winner in a 3-2 victory. If you only watch one Champions League game this week, this could be the most exciting of the lot. Could be.Wednesday 7 March
19.30 Wrexham v Luton Town, Blue Square Bet Premier, Premier Sports
Two of the Conference giants meet on Wednesday with plenty at stake. If Luton win, they may as well take a detour to deliver the title to Fleetwood Town on their way home. A win for the Welsh side leaves them in striking distance of the leaders; in a division with only one automatic promotion place, this is a big one.19.30 Tottenham Hotspur v Stevenage, FA Cup Fifth Round Replay, ESPN/ESPN HD
Gary Smith's new charges continued their proud FA Cup tradition by drawing 0-0 with the country's form team - and they put out a relatively strong side - in the Fifth Round, but face a huge task when they travel to White Hart Lane for the replay. The winners will host Bolton Wanderers in the last eight.19.45 Apoel Nicosia v Lyon, Champions League Last 16 Second Leg, Sky Sports 2/HD2/3D
Like the game in Lisbon, this game sees a visiting side arrive with the slenderest of leads. Lyon won their home leg 1-0 and the Cypriot champions will be confident of restoring parity. Another tie still in the balance, and another one to watch.19.45 Barcelona v Bayer Leverkusen, Champions League Last 16 Second Leg, ITV1/ITV1 HD
3-1 is a first leg result that can be turned around - I've even seen Aston Villa do it. But when the second leg is away from home, and the opponents are Barcelona, the task becomes incredibly daunting. In truth, Barca won this tie in Germany and Leverkusen only have marginally more hope of progression than the stricken Gunners.01.00 (Thu) Boca Juniors v Fluminense, Copa Libertadores, Premier Sports
It's Argentina v Brazil as these two teams battle it out for top spot in Group 4. Fluminense won their opening game, defeating Arsenal 1-0, but Boca didn't get off to the best of starts. They had to settle for a draw against Venezuelan side Zamora.Thursday 8 March
20.05 Manchester United v Athletic Bilbao, Europa League Round of 16 First Leg, Channel 5
Javier Hernandez turned out to be the key man for Manchester United as they embarked upon their second choice European journey over two legs against Ajax. His goals gave United a 2-0 and then 3-0 aggregate lead before the Dutch side fought back to 3-2 to create the proverbial nervy ending for Alex Ferguson's men.Sunday, February 26, 2012
Midweek TV Preview: 27 - 29 February 2012
Monday 27 February
19:45 Shrewsbury Town v Crawley Town, League Two, Sky Sports 1 / HD1
One points separates these two in the play-off zone. Shrewsbury have the second best home win record in the division and have yet to lose at the Meadow. Crawley are managed by a convicted fraudster and no one knows where their money is coming from. An easy choice for the neutrals then.Tuesday 28 February
19:00 Brazil v Bosnia Herzegovina, International Friendly, ESPN / ESPN HD
Ronaldinho's patchy form for Flamengo has not prevented his selection for Brazil's home match in Switzerland, yes Switzerland. Quite how many home games the Seleção plan to to play in their homeland in the build up to the World Cup in 2014 remains to be seen. Let's hope the hosts don't find themselves strangers in their own land when the tournament comes around.Wednesday 29 February
17:30 England U21 v Belgium U21, UEFA U21 Championships 2013 Qualifying, ESPN / ESPN HD
Brian Eastick and John Peacock take the reins while Psycho looks after the grown-ups. Seems odd that Pearce should take a back seat for this important competitive fixture so he can manage a friendly but that's England for you.17:30 Scotland U21 v Holland U21, U21 International, Sky Sports 1
Scotland are second behind the Dutch in this group but beat them, in the reverse fixture. Huddersfield goal machine, Jordan Rhodes, has been tearing up this group with six goals in six games.19:45 Slovenia v Scotland, International Friendly, Primetime
This is a pay per view event available on Sky and Virgin. You can watch it for £4.99 or you could give it a miss.19:45 Northern Ireland v Norway International Friendly, Sky Sports 3 / HD3
Michael O'Neill makes his bow as Northern Ireland coach. The former Shamrock Rovers manager may lack pedigree on the surface but was the man who masterminded that stunning Europa League win at Partizan Belgrade, last year, to take Rovers into the Group Stages. Good luck to him, say I.19:45 Wales v Costa Rica, International Friendly, Sky Sports 2 / HD2
An opportunity for the Welsh public to pay their respects to Gary Speed in this memorial match. Football takes a back seat in what promises to be an emotional evening.19:45 Republic of Ireland v Czech Republic, International Friendly, Sky Sports 1 / HD1
Two outsiders for Euro 2012 meet in a match of moderate interest.20:00 England v Holland International Friendly, ITV1 / ITV1 HD
The truth is there is little to learn from this match from an England point of view. However, the Dutch are one of the favourites to win Euro 2012 and fans of international football will be curious to see Bert van Marwijk's team as he prepares for the Summer. If he plays, Klaas Jan Huntelaar is the big goal threat with 18 goals in the German Bundesliga.Sunday, February 19, 2012
Midweek TV Preview: 20 - 23 February 2012
Monday 20 February
19.45 Brentford v Carlisle United, League One, Sky Sports 1/HD1
King Arthur: "What news of Carlisle?" Sir Eric of the Lake: "They won 3-1..." Those were the days, not just in terms of Morecambe & Wise's vintage era but of also with respect to United's recent form. Three wins from their last nine makes a lie of their current placing - seventh in League One - but at least they face more inconsistent opposition in their hosts today. It's only one win in their last nine for Brentford.Tuesday 21 February
17.00 CSKA Moscow v Real Madrid, UEFA Champions League Last 16 1st Leg, Sky Sports 2/HD2
CSKA's first match since the Russian Premier League closed for the winter break at the end of November, and it comes against Europe's form team. Only two defeats since 21 September 2011 put Real firmly in the box seat, and if their 4-0 demolition of Racing Santander at the weekend is anything to go by, the Russians may be looking at a damage limitation exercise here.17.30 Bologna v Fiorentina, Serie A, ESPN/ESPN HD
The home side ended their run of four straight draws with a surprising 3-0 win at Inter last Friday. A similar performance at home to La Viola will take them nearer mid-table security for a while.19.45 Napoli v Chelsea, UEFA Champions League Last 16 1st Leg, Sky Sports 2/HD2/3D
Napoli coach Walter Mazzarri is banned from both legs of this tie for pushing Villareal's Nilmar during Napoli's previous Champions League match in November. Mazzarri claimed Villareal's players were timewasting and shoved the Brazilian forward to motivate his players. "I’ll do anything so that my team can win a game. I’m even prepared to sleep outside,” Mazzarri said. Looks like he'll be motivating his team from the Director's box at the Stadio San Paolo on this occasion.Wednesday 22 February
17.00 Man City v Porto, UEFA Europa League Round of 32 2nd Leg, ESPN/ESPN HD
As is happening with depressing regularity lately, the first leg of this tie was overshadowed by stories of racism. At least Man City's fine band of supporters have the chance to lead by example at the Etihad as their team aims to wrap up the tie following their 2-1 lead in Portugal.19.30 York City v Gateshead, Blue Square Premier League, Premier Sports
Gateshead are desperate for wins. They won't get one at Bootham Crescent.19.45 Basel v Bayern Munich, UEFA Champions League Last 16 1st Leg, Sky Sports 2/HD2
Both these teams met in the group stage of the 2010-11 Champions League and Bayern won both ties with a 5-1 aggregate. Basel have stepped up a gear since then, eliminating Man United from this season's competition, but Bayern are still favourites to win this tie with only one defeat in their last 11 games.19.45 Marseille v Inter Milan, UEFA Champions League Last 16 1st Leg, ITV1/ITV1 HD
On current form, L'OM are just edging out PSG as the best team in Ligue 1 and were it not for the shockingly poor start to the season, they'd probably be top of the table by now. Speaking of shocking, Inter have lost five of their last six matches and could do with a morale-boosting win to stop their slide going any further.Thursday 23 February
01.00 Velez Sarsfield v Guadalajara, Copa Libertadores, Premier Sports
Still early days in Round Two of this season's competition. Sarsfield are aiming to go at least one better than their semi-final appearance last year where they lost to eventual runners-up Peñarol.18.00 Valencia v Stoke City, UEFA Europa League Round of 32 2nd Leg, ESPN/ESPN HD
Still plenty to play for after Stoke conceded a single goal in the first leg. Unfortunately this crucial match comes at a time when Stoke are on a wretched run of form, but we're keeping our fingers crossed that The Potters will dig deep and reach the last 16 as they deserve.18.00 Athletic Bilbao v Lokomotiv Moscow, UEFA Europa League Round of 32 2nd Leg, ITV4/ITV4 HD
A 1-0 win will be enough to see Bilbao through to the next round, but they trail 2-1 from the first leg. Muniain put the Basques in front in a snowy Russian capital, but a Denis Glushakov penalty and Felipe Caicedo's winner mean Lokomotive have the advantage at the San Mamés.19.45 Derby County v Leicester City, Championship, Sky Sports 1/HD1
Oh dear, oh dear, oh Derby. Points are being dropped quicker than Luis Suarez from a UEFA Repect campaign. Leicester, on the other hand, will be buoyant following their FA Cup victory over Norwich at the weekend and must be the favourites to win here.20.05 Anderlecht v AZ Alkmaar, UEFA Europa League Round of 32 2nd Leg, ESPN/ESPN HD
The Belgians may have been the only side to win all six of their group games, but they still lost to AZ through an Adam Maher goal in the first leg. Should be an equally close match the second time around too.20.05 Sporting Lisbon v Legia Warsaw, UEFA Europa League Round of 32 2nd Leg, ITV4 /ITV4 HD
Twice the Poles took the lead in the first leg and twice the Portuguese equalised, but those two goals for Sporting mean they'll have the away goal advantage, should it be needed here. Wouldn't be surprised if it was.20.05 Man Utd v Ajax, UEFA Europa League Round of 32 2nd Leg, Channel 5/Channel 5 HD
You're not *still* laughing, are you?Monday, February 13, 2012
Monday 13 February
19.45 Siena v Roma, Serie A, ESPN/ESPN HD
Despite Siena's lowly postion in the table this is hardly an easy tie for Roma. Siena have put in some excellent performances at home recently, against a stuttering Napoli and a 4-0 hammering of third placed Lazio. Roma are still looking for their first win away from home in 2012.19.45 Gillingham v Southend, League Two, Sky Sports 1/HD1
I'm assuming this is being dubbed by Sky as the battle of the Thames Estuary - or some similar nonsense. Both teams are in a bit of a slump at the moment: Southend's poor run has seen them drop from first to third and with Swindon and Torquay piling up the points they could drop even further soon.Tuesday 14 February
17.30 Braga v Besiktas, UEFA Europa League Round of 32 1st Leg, ESPN/ESPN HD
Besitkas are the seeded team here having finished top of their group (ahead of Stoke) while Braga finished second behind Brugges. Since then though, Braga have gone on a run of nine straight wins while Besitkas have just one point from their last four domestic games. The sour air of corruption in Turkish football has turned many fans away from the game; a good run in this competition for Besikas could go a long way to winning them back.19.45 Bayer Leverkusen v Barcelona, UEFA Champions League Last 16 1st Leg, Sky Sports 2/HD2
Is Messi burnt out? Probably not but the pundits need to blame Saturday's defeat to Osasuna on something. Leverkeusen, while not tearing up any trees in the Bundesliga, won all their home games in qualifying. The Champions on the other hand, have won every away game in the Champions League they've had since defeat to Arsenal at this stage last season.19.45 Lyon v APOEL, UEFA Champions League Last 16 1st Leg, Sky Sports 4/HD4
What about a little romance on Valentine's Day? APOEL topped a group that held three of the last four UEFA Cup/Europa League winners. It's usually at this point you discovery that they've got this far because their team is being bank-rolled by evil. On the face of it, this doesn't seem to be the case here. The only criticism you could possibly put their way is a lack of domestic players in their starting eleven, which has a very heavy Portugese/Brazilian bias.Wednesday 15 February
17.00 Zenit v Benfica, UEFA Champions League Last 16 1st Leg, Sky Sports 2/HD2
It's been cold enough here over the last week or so - I shudder to think what it must be like in St Petersburg now. Zenit might be a bit ring rusty having only played just two friendlies since their last match at the beginning of December.17.30 Parma v Juventus, Serie A, ESPN/ESPN HD
Parma's recent run has seen them put some daylight between themselves and the relegation zone but they've suffered heavy defeats this season when going up against contenders for the Scudetto. Juve lost their top stop at the weekend thanks to their match with Bologna being called off - they're now two points behind Milan with two games in hand.19.45 Milan v Arsenal, UEFA Champions League Last 16 1st Leg, ITV1/ITV1 HD
Arsenal have to get used to life without Thierry all over again - which is a shame because he enjoyed playing at the San Siro. Milan should be favourites but will know they have lost their last three games here against English opposition.00.00 (Thurs) Deportivo Tachira v Corinthians, Copa Libertadores Group 6, Premier Sports
Corithians make a return to the Group stage of the Libertadores after missing out last year in the qualifying round. Tachira are Venezuela's only representative in this stage of the contest; they made it as far as the quarter finals in 2004 but this is just their second appearance at this stage since then.Thursday 16 February
18.00 Ajax v Man Utd, UEFA Europa League Round of 32 1st Leg, Channel 5/Channel 5 HD
Stop laughing.18.00 Legia Warsaw v Sporting, UEFA Europa League Round of 32 1st Leg, ITV4/ITV4 HD
Both teams cruised through their groups with games to spare. The Polish season was due to start at the weekend with the Polish Super Cup at the brand new Euro 2012 stadium in Warsaw between Legia and Wisla. However, it was postponed due to security concerns - leading to a protest from 3,000 disgruntled Legia fans.18.00 Lazio v Atletico Madrid, UEFA Europa League Round of 32 1st Leg, ESPN/ESPN HD
This actually the game you should be watching instead of Channel 5.20.05 FC Porto v Man City, UEFA Europa League Round of 32 1st Leg, ITV1/ITV1 HD
I said stop laughing!20.05 Stoke City v Valencia, UEFA Europa League Round of 32 1st Leg, ESPN/ESPN HD
Ok, now you can laugh.Monday, February 6, 2012
Midweek TV Preview: 6 - 9 February 2012
Monday 6 February
20.00 Liverpool v Tottenham Hotspur, Premier League, Sky Sports 1/HD1/3D
Monday night's visit to Anfield gives Spurs the chance not only to consolidate in third but take a step closer to a Champions League spot by effectively knocking Liverpool out of the battle for fourth. The Reds remain inconsistent and only Manchester City have beaten Spurs in the league since early December.Tuesday 7 February
19.45 Sheffield Wednesday v Blackpool, FA Cup Fourth Round Replay, ESPN/ESPN HD
The Owls came close to upsetting Championship high-flyers Blackpool in their Fourth Round tie on 28th January, but Clinton Morrison's first half goal was cancelled out in the last minute by a penalty kick from another former Birmingham City striker, Kevin Phillips. They go again at Hillsborough on Tuesday and this time there will be a winner.19.45 Swindon Town v Barnet, JP Trophy Area Final Second Leg, Sky Sports 1/HD1
The Football League Trophy's at its pointy end, and the Southern Area Final is finely poised at 1-1 after the first leg at Underhill. Barnet have joined in with the trend for bringing back retired or ageing players; their equaliser was scored by Mark Hughes. I know, I know.21.00 Athletic Bilbao v Mirandes, Copa del Rey Semi-Final Second Leg, Sky Sports 2/HD2
Third-tier Mirandes gave themselves an unexpected lifeline at the very end of their first leg match against Athletic Bilbao. Fernando Llorente's brace had given the visitors a healthy lead but a last minute Ander Lambarri strike keeps the underdogs in the tie with 90 minutes to go.Wednesday 8 February
16.00 Zambia v Ghana, Africa Cup of Nations Semi-Final, British Eurosport/HD / ITV4/ITV4 HD
Ghana needed extra time to see off Tunisia in Franceville in the quarter-finals. After John Mensah's opener, Saber Khelifa equalised for Tunisia before the break. One of the brightest of Ghana's Black Stars secured the extra time winner, Andre Ayew striking ten minutes into the first period.19.00 Mali v Ivory Coast, Africa Cup of Nations Semi-Final, British Eurosport/HD
Mali's passage to the last four was somewhat rougher than that of their semi-final opponents. Pierre Aubameyang's missed penalty for co-hosts Gabon was punished by Bakary Traore and Seydou Keita to send Mali into a clash with favourites Ivory Coast, who beat Equatorial Guinea 3-0 the previous evening.19.45 AC Milan v Juventus, Coppa Italia Semi-Final First Leg, ESPN/ESPN HD
In-form Juventus had no problem disposing of Roma in the previous round. Simon Kjaer's late own goal added insult to injury, capping a 3-0 Juventus win built upon first half goals from Emanuele Giaccherini and Alessandro del Piero. Their semi-final opponents came from behind to beat Lazio 3-1 in the last eight.19.45 Middlesbrough v Sunderland, FA Cup Fourth Round Replay, ITV1/ITV1 HD
As if once weren't boring enough, the FA Cup cruelly serves up another north-east derby. ITV snapped it up, perhaps sensing their chance to show some long lingering shots of St Martin O'Neill, he who is incapable of doing wrong and must be judged a genius after just five minutes in the job. To put it another way, come on Boro.19.45 Hearts v Celtic, Scottish Premier League, Sky Sports 1/HD1
Celtic haven't dropped a point since early November, a run of twelve matches that's impressive even in a league so lacking in competition. They've hauled in Rangers in the process and a win at Hearts on Wednesday evening will take them four points clear blah blah.20.00 Barcelona v Valencia, Copa del Rey Semi-Final Second Leg, Sky Sports 2/HD2
After seeing off Real Madrid in the quarters, Barcelona still have work to do in the semis of the Copa del Rey. After conceding an early Jonas goal in the first leg, Carles Puyol led by example and scored the equaliser that puts Barca in the driving seat for a place in the final.00.00 (Thu) Vasco da Gama v Nacional, Copa Libertadores, Premier Sports
The Copa Libertadores group stage begins this week, and Premier Sports' coverage begins with an attractive tie in Rio between Brazil's Vasco and Nacional of Uruguay. Nacional have the historical Libertadores advantage, with three triumphs compared to Vasco's solitary 1998 win.Thursday 9 February
19.45 Siena v Napoli, Coppa Italia Semi-Final First Leg, ESPN/ESPN HD
Two goals from Edinson Cavani, one a scintillating solo effort, eased Napoli past Inter Milan in the last round. Up next, a first leg semi-final clash against Siena, who reached this stage by winning at Chievo despite playing a third of the game with only ten men.Monday, January 30, 2012
Midweek TV Preview: 30 January - 2 February 2012
Monday 30 January
18.00 Sudan v Burkina Faso, 2012 African Cup of Nations Group B, British Eurosport/HD
Nothing grows under the heavy roller as Clement Atlee once said and with the heavy rollers of Nigeria, Cameroon and African Champions, Egypt removed from this tournament, the Africa Cup of Nations has flourished. Sudan have yet to win in their two games but have their best hope for three points against bottom of the group Burkina Faso.18.00 Ivory Coast v Angola, 2012 African Cup of Nations Group B, British Eurosport 2
The Ivorians will fear no one in the Quarter Finals but could lose top spot in their group so are unlikely to relax for this game. Angola could still miss out if they lose and Sudan win.19.45 Oldham Athletic v Chesterfield, Johnstone's Paint Trophy Area Final 2nd Leg, Sky Sports 1 / HD1
If you're still hungry for some football after the excitement of the Africa Cup Of Nations then a lower division clash with a place at Wembley at stake may take your fancy. It's 2-1 to Chesterfield on aggregate so things are nicely poised at Boundary Park. We'll be keeping an eye on this while we record the Sound Of Football.Tuesday 31 January
18.00 Gabon v Tunisia, 2012 African Cup of Nations Group C, British Eurosport/HD
I missed the Gabon v Morocco game which sounded like a doozy. Bruno Zita Mbanangoye’s 97th (ninety seventh) minute free kick saw the hosts take maximum points and are through to the Quarter Finals making this game a play off for top spot.18.00 Niger v Morocco, 2012 African Cup of Nations Group C, British Eurosport 2
Hard to imagine a team as capable as Morocco with no points. Goodness knows what controversy reigned last Thursday after conceding that last last gasp goal to Gabon which dumped them out of the Cup. Niger's achievement has been in their attendance but would really add some salt into Moroccan wounds if they produce a win. It's not unlikely too if Niger's performance against Tunisia was anything to go by.19.45 Parma v Juventus, Serie A, ESPN/ESPN HD
Unbeaten Juve look to extend their lead at the top of the table. An away defeat would constitute a shock under most circumstances but particularly against a mediocre Parma.20.00 Everton v Man City, Premier League, Sky Sports 2/HD2/3D
Time was that this was a well matched and tasty sort-of-derby between two clubs with similar resources and ambitions. City may have lost their soul since becoming monied but I'm sure that will be scant consolation to the Everton fans who are watching their status diminish before their very eyes. Romantics will be hoping for a home win but should not bet on one.20.00 Mirandes v Athletic Bilbao, Copa Del Rey Semi Final 1st Leg, Sky Sports 3/HD3
On paper this should be a straightforward path to the final for tactics poster-boy Bielsa and his Bilbao boys. However, Mirandes are top of their Segunda B division and unbeaten at home. While an upset is unlikely over two legs against an Athletic team who have yet to concede in the Cup this season, a home win may provide some value on your coupon.Wednesday 1 February
17.00 Atalanta v Genoa, Serie A, ESPN/ESPN HD
Just the seventeen goals conceded by Genoa in the last five games then. Atalanta have lost their last three but they were against Juve, Lazio and Milan so will be looking to improve on the paltry eleven goals scored at home this season.18.00 Botswana v Mali, 2012 African Cup of Nations Group D, British Eurosport/HD
There are a few permutations involved in qualifying from Group D. More on that later. First, hats off to Botswana for qualifying, although they must be disappointed to have been thrashed by Guinea 6-1 on Saturday. Despite that they can still progress if Ghana beat Guinea and they win this match by nine goals.18.00 Ghana v Guinea, 2012 African Cup of Nations Group D, British Eurosport 2
A Guinea and Mali win would put them and Ghana on six points. The group stages are determined by the head-to-head results and then by head-to-head goal difference. The most straightforward thing would be for Ghana to not lose. They will then go through and be joined by either Mali or Guinea depending on what happens in the other game.19.45 Lazio v AC Milan, Serie A, ESPN / ESPN HD
Assuming Juve do the business at Parma on Tuesday, Milan will still be playing catch up. Their trip is tougher as it is against a highly placed Lazio.20.00 Sunderland v Norwich City, Premier League, Sky Sports 2/HD2
On the surface this is a mid table clash between two ordinary sides. However, Sunderland are the most improved team in England right now and everyone is rightly full of praise for Norwich's achievements. Of course whether that makes for a good game or not remains to be seen.20.00 Valencia v Barcelona, Copa Del Rey Semi Final 1st Leg, Sky Sports 3/HD3
Hard to call this game since much depends on how hungry Barca are to win the Cup. In terms of the league there are ten points between the Catalans in second and Valencia in third which tells you all you need to know about football in Spain.00.00 Flamengo v Real Potosi, Copa Libertadores, Premier Sports
The Bolivian Clausura is barely underway but Potosi still managed an impressive first leg 2-1 win against Flamengo. Nevertheless, you would make the Brazilians favourites to enter the group stages with the second leg in Rio.Thursday 2 February
19.45 Novara v Chievo, Serie A, ESPN/ESPN HD
Bottom club Novara can take heart from Chievo's indifferent away record. However, there is very little interest here for the neutral unless you like to watch bad Italian football.Sunday, January 22, 2012
Midweek TV Preview: 23 - 26 January 2012
Monday 23 January
16.00 Gabon v Niger, African Cup of Nations Group C, British Eurosport/British Eurosport HD
As one of the co-hosts, Gabon have to be a decent bet for a place in the latter stages of the tournament. In an open group, they face a Niger team that impressively qualified above Egypt and South Africa. The wise money probably goes on The Panthers, but only just.19.00 Morocco v Tunisia, African Cup of Nations Group C, British Eurosport/British Eurosport HD
The Moroccans have, frankly, been a washout in the last two CAN competitions and are long overdue a decent campaign. They could well get it this time around, despite Marouane Chamakh being a part of their squad.19.45 Southampton v Leicester City, Championship, Sky Sports 1/HD1
The Saints go into this match knowing they've been toppled from the Championship summit by West Ham. A swift return is required and against a Leicester team on poor form of late, they should get the win they need to restore the status quo.Tuesday 24 January
16.00 Ghana v Botswana, African Cup of Nations Group D, British Eurosport/British Eurosport HD
Something of a baptism of fire for Botswana, here at their first African Nations Cup but facing one of the stand-out favourites in their opening game. Featuring a wealth of European-based stars including Andre Ayew, Sulley Muntari and Agyemang Badu, The Black Stars should be treating this like an exhibition match, but this tournament has been known to throw up an upset or two in recent editions.19.00 Mali v Guinea, African Cup of Nations Group D, British Eurosport/British Eurosport HD
Mali made a complete hash of their 2010 CAN campaign, a run of form that spilled over into their qualification for this one. Guinea, for their part, have been here many times before but are unlikely to set the tournament on fire. A draw seems likely.19.45 Juventus v Roma, Coppa Italia Quarter Final, ESPN/ESPN HD
Not easy to pick a winner between these two. Both teams are playing well in the league but Roma have won two of their last three games at Juve's ground which may just give them the confidence they need to win it.20.00 Mirandes v Espanyol, Copa del Rey Quarter Final 2nd Leg, Sky Sports 1/HD1
Arguably the story of the quarter finals surrounds the giant-killing exploits of third-tier Mirandes. Having already knocked out La Liga opponents Racing Santander and Villareal 3-1 on aggregate, they now find themselves 3-2 down after the first half of this tie against the team currently fifth in the Primera Division. A third scalp is still entirely possible for the team from Burgos.19.45 Cardiff City v Crystal Palace, Carling Cup Semi Final 2nd Leg, BBC2/BBC HD
Advantage Palace after the fantastic first leg which saw Anthony Gardner's headed goal give the Londoners a 1-0 lead. Palace will be aware that Cardiff have lost the fewest games of anyone in the Championship this season and having seen their 1-0 lead at Blackpool turn into a 2-1 defeat last weekend, nothing will be taken for granted.Wednesday 25 January
16.00 Libya v Zambia, African Cup of Nations Group A, British Eurosport/British Eurosport HD
Zambia were the surprise winners on the opening weekend of this year's CAN, silencing Senegal with an impressive 2-1 win. Libya, meanwhile, will need to regroup following a disappointing defeat to co-hosts Equitorial Guinea. If Zambia can remain composed and get a win, they could be set fair for a place in the latter stages while at the same time knocking out The Mediterranean Knights.16.00 Chievo v Siena, Coppa Italia Quarter Final, ESPN/ESPN HD
Chievo have won only one of their last seven games against their Serie A opponents but with Siena trying not to drop into the bottom three in the Serie A table, now might be a good time to strike a crucial blow. The winner plays either Napoli or Inter in the semi finals.19.00 Mallorca v Athletic Bilbao, Copa del Rey Quarter Final 2nd Leg, Sky Sports 2/HD2
Bilbao remain in fine form in the league and have a 2-0 lead in the bank from the first leg of this tie. It's been five long years since they last won at the Iberostar Stadium, however, so a transferral of their La Liga results will be very welcome to reach the last four.19.00 Equatorial Guinea v Senegal, African Cup of Nations Group A, British Eurosport/British Eurosport HD
A cracking start for the co-hosts in their CAN debut and who's to say they can't repeat their achievements against a faltering Senegalese side? Expect more in the way of fervent euphoria if the home side even so much as score against the 2002 World Cup participants.19.30 Luton Town v Mansfield Town, Blue Square Premier League, Premier Sports
Mansfield have turned things around of late and are currently unbeaten in four matches. Luton, however, are unbeaten in nine and haven't conceded a goal at home since December 10th.19.45 Napoli v Inter, Coppa Italia Quarter Final, ESPN/ESPN HD
Napoli left it until the last five minutes to grab an equaliser away to Siena at the weekend and a nervy performance is the last thing they need against the current Coppa Italia holders here.19.45 Liverpool v Man City, Carling Cup Semi Final 2nd Leg, Sky Sports 1/HD1/3D
Like Crystal Palace in the other semi-final, Liverpool hold a 1-0 lead going into the second leg. Given the weekend's results, it's difficult seeing The Reds hold onto the advantage as morale in the Dalglish camp - to say nothing of technical ability - seems to have reached rock bottom. A Herculean effort will therefore be needed to stop City's advances which makes for a mouth-watering conclusion to the tie.21.00 Barcelona v Real Madrid, Copa del Rey Quarter Final 2nd Leg, Sky Sports 2/HD2
There are so many El Clasicos these days that someone's going to have to recategorise them to suit the occasion. We're labelling this one 'El Clasico Ordinario.'Thursday 26 January
16.00 Sudan v Angola, African Cup of Nations Group B, British Eurosport/British Eurosport HD
The Palancas Negras are desperately seeking a return to the form that took them to the 2006 World Cup but which has since fizzled away. Against Sudan - one-time champions in 1970 - they stand a decent chance of getting three points at least.19.00 Ivory Coast v Burkina Faso, African Cup of Nations Group B, ITV4/ITV4 HD/British Eurosport/British Eurosport HD
A golden crop of players knows this tournament represents one last chance to show they're not the late stage chokers we've seen in recent years. Burkina Faso, we're sorry to say, are here mainly to make up the numbers and shouldn't stand in the way of their opponents march into the knockout stages.19.45 Lazio v Milan, Coppa Italia Quarter Final, ESPN/ESPN HD
The last four meetings between these two sides have been draws but Milan struggled to get rid of Novara in the last round of the competition, only winning 2-1 after extra time. That said, both sides have lost just once since late November so another draw could be on the cards.20.30 Levante v Valencia, Copa del Rey Quarter Final 2nd Leg, Sky Sports 1/HD1
Valencia won the first leg 4-1 to ensure you won't be watching this one at the end of another all-too-short weekend.Monday, January 16, 2012
Midweek TV Preview: 16 - 19 January 2012
Monday 16 January
20.00 Wigan Athletic v Manchester City, Premier League, Sky Sports 1/HD1
Bottom hosts top but is this fixture as cut and dried as it appears? City are having a wobble and haven't won away from the Etihad in the League for two months. Wigan of course haven't done much better, hence their position, but they could quite conceivably do enough to snatch a draw here - or get hammered - one of the two.Tuesday 17 January
19.30 Leicester City v Nottingham Forest, FA Cup 3rd Round Replay, ESPN/ESPN HD
These two ground out a goalless draw at the City Ground and with a home tie against League Two Swindon Town both sides will fancy their chances of prgressing well in the competition. Watch it if East Midland "derbies" are your thing.20.00 QPR v MK Dons, FA Cup 3rd Round Replay, ITV4/ITV4 HD
Mark Hughes's first game in charge showed promise for QPR fans despite nothing to show for their trip to the Sports Direct Arena. Sparky could be forgiven if he used this match to try out a few things to get to know his squad better and to concentrate on keeping his new side up - but the promise of local rivals Chelsea at home in the next round makes this a must win.Wednesday 18 January
19.00 Athletic Bilbao v Mallorca, Copa del Rey Quarter Final 1st Leg, Sky Sports 2/HD2
Wednesday offers an explosion of domestic cup action from across Europe starting in Spain. Athletic are proving hard to beat and have been steadily climbing the table after a shaky start to the season. For the Islanders, the Copa has provided a highlight to an otherwise ordinary campaign. The second legs are next week.19.45 Wrexham v Brighton , FA Cup 3rd Round Replay, ESPN/ESPN HD/S4C
A cracking cup tie at the Amex should have a worthy sequel here. Victory comes with the added bonus of a very lucrative televised home tie against Newcastle United.19.45 Dunfermline Ath v Inverness CT, Scottish FA Cup 4th Round Replay, Sky Sports 1/HD1
A Jonny Hayes equaliser five minutes into injury time saved 10 man ICT's place in the Cup. The goal, that came from a fresh air clearance from Dunfermline's stand-in keeper, summed up Athletic's season with just one win in all competitions since August. The winners get plum home tie against Celtic in the Fifth Round.20.00 Wolves v Birmingham City, FA Cup 3rd Round Replay, ITV1/ITV1 HD
This was an awful game in the original tie and it'll be an awful game this time too. Poor choice, ITV. Winners are away to Sheffield United next round.20.00 Milan v Novara, Coppa Italia Round of 16, ESPN/ESPN HD
Should be a fairly routine win for Milan against the team that is rooted to the bottom of Serie A. There's an away trip to Lazio in the Quarter finals for the winners.21.00 Real Madrid v Barcelona, Copa del Rey Quarter Final 1st Leg, Sky Sports 2/HD2
These two legs represent the eighth and ninth meeting of these two sides since April. In that run of games, Cristiano Ronaldo's extra time winner in the Final of this competition was Real's only victory. Still, always worth watching.Thursday 19 January
20.00 Inter v Genoa, Coppa Italia Round of 16, ESPN/ESPN HD
These two met at the San Siro at the same stage last year and battled out a 3-2 home win. Inter went on to win the trophy and in their current form you wouldn't beat against them doing it again (yes, they're a hell of a lot better than the were at the start of the season). Napoli at home is next up in the Quarter Finals.Monday, January 9, 2012
Midweek TV Preview: 9 - 12 January 2012
Monday 9 January
19.45 Arsenal v Leeds United, FA Cup Third Round, ESPN/ESPN HD
Victory over Burnley ended a three-game winless streak for Leeds, whose visit to the Emirates will be dominated by the hubbub surrounding returning Arsenal icon Thierry Henry. The Frenchman signed his loan deal in time to be available for tonight's game and will be considered for inclusion by Arsene Wenger.19.45 Cliftonville v Dungannon Swifts, Irish League, Sky Sports 1/HD1
Rodney McAree's Swifts head to Cliftonville as underdogs, with the Reds in third place and the visitors in ninth. But they haven't lost in three matches and currently sit at the top of a four-team pack at the bottom of the table. Cliftonville have scored more goals than any other team in the division this season.Tuesday 10 January
20.00 Crystal Palace v Cardiff City, Carling Cup Semi-Final First Leg, Sky Sports 1/HD1/3D
The Carling Cup final on 25th February will involve a Championship side, and these two reached the last four by beating Premier League opponents. Cardiff saw off a poor Blackburn Rovers side, but it was Palace who stole the headlines by defeating Manchester United at Old Trafford.21.00 Malaga v Real Madrid, Copa del Rey Fifth Round Second Leg, Sky Sports 2/HD2
A stirring first leg comeback put Real in the driving seat as they travel to Malaga looking for a place in the quarter-finals. After going 2-0 down inside half an hour at the Bernabeu, goals from Sami Khedira, Gonzalo Higuain and Karim Benzema gave Jose Mourinho's men the advantage.Wednesday 11 January
19.45 Manchester City v Liverpool, Carling Cup Semi-Final First Leg, BBC1/BBC1 HD
The big games are coming thick and fast for Manchester City, who follow up Sunday's FA Cup derby game against rivals United with a League Cup semi-final tie against Liverpool. The Reds are subject to more controversy after their FA Cup win over Oldham Athletic which, like any result on Wednesday will be, was achieved without suspended striker Luis Suarez.21.00 Sevilla v Valencia, Copa del Rey Fifth Round Second Leg, Sky Sports 1/HD1
This tie is as finely balanced as one could hope. A 1-0 win at home in the first leg gave Valencia a slight advantage ahead of the second, but they face a tricky visit to Sevilla with no margin for error. Alcorcon or Levante await the winners.Thursday 12 January
21.00 Osasuna v Barcelona, Copa del Rey Fifth Round Second Leg, Sky Sports 1/HD1
Barca are home and dry thanks to a 4-0 victory at the Nou Camp in the first leg, the goals coming from a brace each by Cesc Fabregas and Leo Messi. The reward for Pep Guardiola's side is a last eight clash with either Malaga or Real Madrid.Sunday, January 1, 2012
Midweek TV Preview: 3 - 5 January 2012
Tuesday 3 January
20.00 Man City v Liverpool, Premier League, Sky Sports 1/HD1/3D
City blew the chance to establish some distance between themselves and United thanks to an errant linesman's flag at the Stadium of Light on New Years Day (not to mention 27 failed attempts on goal). Off pitch controversies aside, Liverpool are very dangerous opponents and this match promises to a thunderer, not to be missed.22.00 Real Madrid v Malaga. Copa Del Rey 5th Round 1st Leg, Sky Sports 2/HD2
After their break for the festivities, those lazy Spanish return for some domestic cup action. Malaga are the nouveau riche of La Liga and like all recently monied clubs will be anxious for quick silverware to justify their expense. Be interesting to see which team wants this more.Wednesday 4 January
20.00 Newcastle United v Man Utd, Premier League, Sky Sports 1/HD1/3D
Only one win in the last eight for the Toon. A worrying decline that could yet see them embroiled in a relegation scrap before the end of the season. Fortunately, for them they have a great chance to beat a United team that are so bad, they can't even manage as much as a point against Blackburn. *scoff*22.00 Barcelona v Osasuna, Copa Del Rey 5th Round 1st Leg, Sky Sports 2/HD2
The visitors are unbeaten in all competitions since they were hammered 7-1 by Real Madrid in November and are having a good season.Their success has not come through sound defensive virtues, however as they are the only team in the top six with a minus goal difference. Keeping things tight at the Nou Camp and bringing them back to their place with a clean sheet will not be part of the plan.Thursday 5 January
19.30 Cambridge United v Southport, Blue Square Premier League, Premier Sports
Southport may be in fourth place but they were honkered 6-0 at home to table topping Fleetwood Town in their last match. Cambridge are only five points behind.Sunday, December 18, 2011
Midweek TV Preview: 19 - 22 December 2011
Monday 19 December
19.45 Crystal Palace v Birmingham City, Championship, Sky Sports 1/HD1
You've got to go back nearly seven years for Palace's last win over Birmingham. Current form and league position suggests this will be a draw, but Dougie Freedman really needs to address that 'Goals Scored' column at home more than anything else right now.19.45 York City v Kidderminster, Blue Square Premier League, Premier Sports
A tasty non-league treat to get you in the festive spirit. Both teams are on good form and gunning for a play-off place; York already occupy one of the appropriate positions as things stand, but a win for The Harriers will see them in the top five too.Tuesday 20 December
17.00 Siena v Fiorentina, Serie A, ESPN/ESPN HD
Plenty of Italian action on ESPN this week and it starts with this clash between two clubs in god-awful form at the moment. Think of it as a chance to watch them before either or both get relegated as seems likely.19.45 Cagliari v AC Milan, Serie A, ESPN/ESPN HD
A small chink of hope for Cagliari comes in the form of Milan's recent slip up in a 2-2 draw against Bologna recently. Unfortunately it does still require the home team to do something, and sadly they've only notched up one league win since the start of October. Three points for the Rossoneri.20.00 Blackburn Rovers v Bolton Wanderers, Premier League, Sky Sports 1/HD1
Battle of the Bottom Two, as t'were. In a nutshell, Stoke have won more matches this season than Blackburn and Bolton put together. Armed with that information, we'll leave it up to you whether you decide to tune in or not.Wednesday 21 December
17.00 Udinese v Juventus, Serie A, ESPN/ESPN HD
The Monochrome Derby, as I believe they call it in Bella Italia. The winner of the last six meetings between these two has alternated consistently. If the pattern continues, the winner of this one will be Juve. And that's about as scientific as this TV Preview gets, fact fans.19.45 Inter Milan v Lecce, Serie A, ESPN/ESPN HD
Only one win the league for Lecce since mid-September, which is why they're bottom of the Serie A table. Strangely, scoring goals hasn't been a problem for them, but against Inter's stingy defence, they've got a snowball in hell's chance of success.20.00 Wigan Athletic v Liverpool, Premier League, Sky Sports 1/HD1
Wigan are fair hanging on by the skin of their teeth at the moment, even salvaging a last-minute equaliser against Chelsea last weekend. Liverpool are playing with more consistency than Chelsea at the moment and should comfortably avoid such a disappointing outcome here.Thursday 22 December
20.00 Tottenham Hotspur v Chelsea, Premier League, Sky Sports 1/HD1
Apparently Harry Redknapp's fronting a new TV ad campaign for Carlsberg. The slogan goes something like "Harry Redknapp doesn't criticise referees, but if he did, he'd probably be the biggest bloody hypocrite in the world..."Monday, December 12, 2011
Midweek TV Preview: 12 - 16 December
Monday 12 December
19.45 Roma v Juventus, Serie A, ESPN/ESPN HD
Udinese's win over Chievo on Sunday sent them to the top of table, a position Juve should retake here against an out of sorts Roma side that haven't managed to get fully into their stride this season under rookie coach Luis Enrique.20.00 Chelsea v Manchester City, Premier League, Sky Sports 1/HD1/3D
Roman Abramovich's Invitation XI take on Sheikh Mansour's Invitation XI. They've spent over £1.5 billion in total so far. I'm sure it's well worth it.00.15 Tigre v Velez Sarsfield, Argentinian Apertura, Premier Sports
Boca completed an undefeated Apertura with a win over All Boys. Tigre can leapfrog today's opponents and finish as high as fourth with a home win.Tuesday 13 December
19.30 Yeovil Town v Fleetwood Town, FA Cup 2nd Round Replay, ESPN/ESPN HD
A dramatic ending in previous game saw Fleetwood snatch a late draw coming back from 2-0 down; player-coach Jamie Milligan keeping his composure to score an equalising 89th minute penalty to keep the Conference side in the competition. A home tie against Blackpool in the Third Round awaits the winners.19.45 St Johnstone v Aberdeen, SPL, Sky Sports 1/HD1
A chance for St Johnstone to regroup after being beaten 3-0 at home by third spot rivals Motherwell at the weekend. Aberdeen have gone almost two months since their win in the SPL.Wednesday 14 December
10.30 Santos v Kashiwa Reysol, FIFA World Club Cup 2011 Semi Final, ESPN/ESPN HD
Yay! Midweek daytime football! Kashiwa Reysol were only crowned J-League Champions on 3 December and entered this tournament as representatives of the host nation five days later. They've already knocked out the Oceania Champions, Auckland and the CONCACAF Champions Monterrey to take on the Copa Libertadores winners. The other semi-final is the same time tomorrow with the final on Sunday.18.00 Besiktas v Stoke City, UEFA Europa League Group E, ESPN/ESPN HD
Stoke need only a draw to finish top of their group. While the home side only need a draw to make sure they go through, they know a win will see them go through top leaving Stoke to face a seeded team in Friday's draw for the next round.20.05 Macclesfield Town v Chelmsford City, FA Cup 2nd Round Replay, ESPN/ESPN HD
The guarantee of a home tie against Premier League opposition for the winners here adds even more to this fixture. While Bolton may not be the make for the most spectacular draw it almost certainly makes sure the cameras will be along too.20.05 Fulham v Odense BK, UEFA Europa League Group K, Channel 5/Channel 5 HD
Match 14 in the tournament so far for Fulham sees them take on the bottom club in the group. They need to match whatever Wisla Krakow manage against Twente to secure their second spot and place in the last 32 - so just the nine more games to go then after this00.15 Universidad de Chile v Liga de Quito, Copa Sudamericana Final 2nd Leg (1-0), Premier Sports
Difficult to see past Universidad for this one - they've steam-rollered their way to the final and their domestic title. They currently on a run of 34 games undefeated in all competitions. The side almost went bust in 2007 but was rescued when the club ownership moved from the University into private hands.Thursday 15 December
10.30 Barcelona v Al Sadd, FIFA World Club Cup 2011 Semi Final, ESPN/ESPN HD
Pep's superstars, still basking in their weekend Clasico victory, enter the tournament and take on the Qatar side that won the AFC Champions League on penalties last month. Al Sadd beat the CAF Champions, Esperance of Tunisia, 2-1 in their quarter final at the weekend.18.00 PAOK v Rubin Kazan, UEFA Europa League Group A, ESPN/ESPN HD
PAOK are through and only need a draw to finish top. Rubin know a draw will be good enough for them to go through. Draw it is then.18.00 Shamrock Rovers v Tottenham Hotspur, UEFA Europa League Group A, ITV4/ITV4 HD
Last week, people got themselves in a right old tizz when Lyon managed to overturn a huge goal difference deficit against a frankly hopeless Zagreb side while Ajax got spanked at home to a Real Madrid side who were wearing flip-flops. The entirely unsubstantiated cries of "fix" went out across Twitter and other outlets - could the same thing happen two weeks in a row?20.05 Birmingham City v NK Maribor, UEFA Europa League Group H, ITV4/ITV4 HD
A win for Birmingham leaves them looking at the other fixture in the group to see if they scrape through as runners up. If Brugge win or draw at home to Braga both of them go through with Brugge finishing top. If Braga win they finish top and are joined by Birmingham - but only if they beat Maribor, of course.20.05 Udinese v Celtic, UEFA Europa League Group I, ESPN/ESPN HD
Simple equation for the Bhoys, they have to beat Udinese to finish second in the group and progress through to the next stage - though they'll need to do what no other Celtic side has done before and win in Italy. The travelling support should have no trouble making themselves heard in a largely empty Stadio Friuli: the attendence only just passed 10,000 when they played Atletico.Friday 16 December 2011
11.00 UEFA Champions League Round of 16 Draw, British Eurosport
Live from Nyon, it's what we've all been waiting for - the end of the group stage nonsense and the return of the away goals rule. Arsenal and Chelsea are seeded as group winners and will be looking to avoid Milan, Napoli or the mighty Basel. Match dates: 14/15 and 21/22 February 2012.12.00 UEFA Europa League Round of 32 Draw, British Eurosport
Manchester United and Manchester City enter the draw as seeds, with Olympiakos, Valencia and the 12 group winners and will play their first leg away. The current holders, Porto, join the remaining Champions League third placed teams and the 12 group runners-up as unseeded teams. As with the Champions League, for this stage, teams from the same association or who played each other in the group stage can't be drawn against each other. Match dates: 16 and 23 February 2012.Monday, December 5, 2011
Midweek TV Preview: 5 - 8 December 2011
Monday 5 December
19.45 Lazio v Novara, Serie A, ESPN/ESPN HD
Novara jumped off the bottom of Serie in their last game with a win over Parma, and followed it up with a Coppa victory over Catania. Their short purple patch meets a formidable foe this evening, though. They travel to Rome to face high-flying Lazio, who are looking to bounce back from a loss against Juventus.20.00 Fulham v Liverpool, Premier League, Sky Sports 1/HD1/3D
Both have been managed by Roy Hodgson in recent years, with very different memories of the nauseating old goat. Fulham haven't won in three and it's not going to get any easier with the visit of Liverpool tonight. The Reds are in rude form and will be disappointing with anything but a win at Craven Cottage.Tuesday 6 December
19.45 Chelsea v Valencia, UEFA Champions League, Sky Sports 2/HD2
The season so far has been a bit of a struggle for Chelsea - you know, relatively speaking - and the quest to qualify from Group E has been a big part of that. They'll be glad when it's over, but only if they defeat Valencia to progress from the group. Unfortunately for Andre Villas-Boas, they didn't manage a victory in Spain.19.45 Olympiakos v Arsenal, UEFA Champions League, Sky Sports 4/HD4
Unlike their rivals from across London, Arsenal are home and dry in Group F. Their hosts on Tuesday still have a realistic hope of success; they're a point behind Marseille, who face a significant challenge of their own on the same evening. The Gunners can take it easy having already ensured that they will top the group.19.45 APOEL Nicosia v Shakhtar Donetsk, UEFA Champions League, Sky Sports Interactive
APOEL have made history in this year's competition and although they can be reached by either of the teams in second and third they cannot be overtaken by both; they will be in the next round which is a remarkable achievement from a very difficult group. Shakhtar have been an unmitigated disappointment in the UCL this season.19.45 Barcelona v BATE Borisov, UEFA Champions League, Sky Sports Interactive
Unbeaten Barcelona have plenty of breathing space and have comfortably topped Group H. Their opponents on Tuesday are BATE Borisov, who are yet to win a game in the group stage this season. This is a dead rubber in the purest sense, so it could go either way. My money's on a free-flowing victory for the home team.19.45 Borussia Dortmund v Marseille, UEFA Champions League, Sky Sports Interactive
Marseille's destiny is in their own hands as they travel to Dortmund to face the Bundesliga champions. BVB's form has improved lately but Marseille have no option but to go for the win. They'll also be keeping their eyes on Arsenal's game in Greece, where the Gunners can seal the French side's path to the next round.19.45 Porto v Zenit St Petersburg, UEFA Champions League, Sky Sports Interactive
Porto host Zenit in a straight shoot-out to join APOEL in the next round. A draw will do the job for Zenit, who have only lost once - to leaders APOEL - and have already defeated Porto in this campaign. It's now or never for Porto, who need a triumphant European night in order to progress.19.45 Genk v Bayer Leverkusen, UEFA Champions League, Sky Sports Interactive
Bayer are in good form domestically and sit pretty at the top of Group E. A win in Belgium will guarantee that the German outfit finish at the top of the group, a target that should be achievable given Genk's showing so far in this year's competition. A goal difference of -14 after five games is quite unimpressive.19.45 Viktoria Plzen v AC Milan, UEFA Champions League, Sky Sports Interactive
Another dead rubber, this time in the Czech Republic were the Rossoneri have exactly nothing to play for. Their hosts probably don't either - even a defeat wouldn't take them to the bottom of the group (for all that matters) unless BATE defeat Barcelona.Wednesday 7 December
19.45 FC Basel v Manchester United, UEFA Champions League, ITV1/ITV1 HD
It's a huge night for Basel, who welcome Manchester United but require nothing less than victory. If they were to beat the Red Devils they would join Benfica in the next round, but a draw is not enough for the hosts, who trail the English champions by a point. ITV might just have picked an absolutel slobberknocker to show this Wednesday. What do you mean they always show United?19.45 Manchester City v Bayern Munich, UEFA Champions League, Sky Sports 2/HD2
Like their city rivals, Manchester City are up against it in the last game of the Champions League group stage. In Group A they host unbeaten and in-form Bayern Munich but they do not have their fate in their own hands. Even a win is not enough to guarantee without a result going their way elsewhere.19.45 Villarreal v Napoli, UEFA Champions League, Sky Sports 4/HD4
The result City require is a a Villarreal win over Napoli, or a draw if City get the job done in full against FCB. The bad news for Roberto Mancini and his expensively-assembled unit of doom? Villarreal have lost all five Champions League matches.19.45 Ajax v Real Madrid, UEFA Champions League, Sky Sports Interactive
Flawless Real Madrid are the team to watch in Europe this season. Victory in the Champions League or La Liga this year would arguably be Jose Mourinho's greatest achievement, and if the season to date is anything to go by then they are capable of overcoming Barcelona. They've already qualified from their UCL group, winning all five matches so far.19.45 Dinamo Zagreb v Lyon, UEFA Champions League, Sky Sports Interactive
There's nothing left to play for for Dinamo, who sit at the bottom of Group D with five defeats to their name. Two 0-0 draws between Lyon and Ajax mean that if Ajax lose and Lyon win, the tie-breaker will drop to the fifth level - that will see Ajax through on goal difference unless there's a seven-goal swing.19.45 Benfica v Otelul Galati, UEFA Champions League, Sky Sports Interactive
This know-nothing writer fancied Basel to nick a place in the top two spots in Group C, and suspected that they might do so at the expense of Benfica. The Portuguese side has taught me to predict nothing in football. Two wins and three draws in a tight group leaves them atop the mini-table looking ahead to the knockout rounds.19.45 Inter Milan v CSKA Moscow, UEFA Champions League, Sky Sports Interactive
The Nerazzurri haven't been pulling up any trees domestically in this season's campaign but they've picked up three wins in the Champions League, enough to guarantee first place in Group B. CSKA need a win, and they need the result to go their way...19.45 Lille v Trabzonspor, UEFA Champions League, Sky Sports Interactive
...when Trabzonspor head to France to face Lille. The bottom three in the group are separated by just one point, but even a CSKA win will only be sufficient if these two draw. If there's a winner here, they're through.
